My Background

Welcome, I’m Lisa (a.k.a. Lisa Jill or LJ)! I’m a yoga instructor and teacher trainer based in NYC. I was first introduced to Yoga at Brooklyn College as part of my training in the BFA acting program, and I quickly became drawn to how the practice helped me cultivate patience, combat self-judgment, and become more present in my every day life–things I’m still working on today!  I am a 500-hour registered yoga teacher certified in the YogaWorks  Method (teachers: Chrissy Cater, Jodie Rufty, & Jenny Aurthur), and also hold a 100-hour Therapeutic & Restorative Yoga certification (teacher: Jillian Pransky). As both a teacher and practitioner, I approach my classes with curiosity, playfulness, and specificity.

What I Teach

I teach public and private classes in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and I whole-heartedly believe that yoga is for every body, but it’s important to find the right style for you.  Below are the types of classes I offer, and a little more about them.

  •  Vinyasa Flow: “Perhaps the most popular style practiced in the West, these classes keep you moving!  You’ll flow continuously through strong sequences of traditional Sun Salutations and standing postures, linking breath with movement and work to build strength and endurance as you push the edge of your balance and flexibility.  In Sasnkrit, vinyasa means ‘to place in a special way,’ and that informs the graceful dance that is a well-planned vinyasa sequence. ”  These classes are recommended for intermediate to advanced practitioners who already have a foundation in yoga asana (postures).

  • Adaptive/Therapeutic Yoga: These sessions are best suited for individuals or small groups who are interested in exploring movement in a more gentle and open-ended manner.  In other words, a therapeutics class is not necessarily rooted in classic yoga postures and shapes, but is a conscious exploration of the mind/body connection and what it needs on a day-to-day, or even moment-to-moment basis. These classes are designed to work slowly with a focus on breath, body awareness and strengthening. Ideal if you have chronic stress, chronic pain, depression, or if you prefer/need to work more slowly, or are interested in shaking up your already established yoga practice. This can be a particularly helpful practice for those who are recently recovering from injury or surgery, and will be adapted for your personal needs (upon doctor approval, of course!).

  • Restorative Yoga:  A relaxation based practice to guide your nervous system into “rest and digest” mode.  Yoga props fully support your body weight in longer-held, passive postures in order to guide your body, breath, and mind into deep relaxation.  Even though you’re seemingly “just lying there”, do not underestimate the benefits of a restorative yoga practice.  This subtle yet profound practice gives your body and nervous system the rejuvenation it needs and deserves.

Why I Teach

When I was 19-years-old, I moved from sunny Southern California to NYC to attend Brooklyn College’s BFA acting & theatre program.  It was a culture shock to say the least.  Practicing yoga has allowed me to find my personal calm within the whirlwind of NYC, and I am passionate about sharing these tools with others. My yoga practice has helped me with both physical and mental health, including anxiety and depression.  It has also been a wonderful compliment to my artistic pursuits as an actor and artistic director of Stable Cable Lab Co., a non-profit theater company dedicated to developing new plays.  No matter what your passion or career path is,  I believe that we are at our happiest and have more to give to our endeavors when we live moment-to-moment and when we feel more in union with our body, breath, and mind.
